Eigenvectors: definition, intuition, computation and applications

Eigenvectors are central objects in linear algebra. Given a square matrix \(A\), an eigenvector \(v\) satisfies \(A v = \lambda v\) for some scalar \(\lambda\); that scalar is the associated eigenvalue. In words, an eigenvector is a direction that the linear transformation \(A\) simply stretches (or compresses and possibly reverses), without rotating into a different direction. Eigenvectors and eigenvalues reveal the intrinsic action of \(A\). They are used across physics, engineering, computer science, data analysis and more — from natural vibration modes and stability analysis to principal component analysis (PCA) in machine learning.

Why eigenvectors matter

Eigenvectors identify invariant directions: if you repeatedly apply a transformation, vectors lying along eigenvectors remain within the same line, scaled each time by the eigenvalue. Mathematical definition

Formally, if \(A\in\mathbb{R}^{n\times n}\), a nonzero vector \(v\in\mathbb{C}^n\) and scalar \(\lambda\in\mathbb{C}\) satisfy \(A v = \lambda v\), then \(v\) is an eigenvector and \(\lambda\) is its eigenvalue. The requirement that \(v\) be nonzero prevents the trivial solution \(v=0\). The eigenvalues are the roots of the characteristic polynomial \(p(\lambda)=\det(A-\lambda I)\). For an n×n matrix there are n roots counting multiplicities (possibly complex).

Computing eigenvectors

Computing eigenvectors typically proceeds in two steps: first compute eigenvalues \(\lambda\), then for each \(\lambda\) solve the linear homogeneous system \((A-\lambda I)v=0\). The solution space (nullspace) of \((A-\lambda I)\) gives all eigenvectors associated with \(\lambda\). For a simple eigenvalue the nullspace is 1-dimensional; for repeated eigenvalues it may be larger (or smaller if the matrix is defective).

Row-reduction to find eigenvectors

The nullspace can be found by row-reducing the augmented matrix \([A-\lambda I \;|\; 0]\). Row reduction (Gaussian elimination) transforms the matrix to reduced row echelon form (RREF). During elimination we identify free variables and express the solution vector in terms of parameter(s). Normalization

Eigenvectors are determined up to a nonzero scalar multiple. For consistent presentation we typically normalize eigenvectors to unit length: \(v \leftarrow v/\|v\|\). Normalization makes vectors comparable and often simplifies downstream use (for example, in orthonormal diagonalization for symmetric matrices where eigenvectors can be chosen orthonormal).

Complex eigenvalues and eigenvectors

Real non-symmetric matrices can have complex eigenvalues and complex eigenvectors. Complex eigenvalues appear in conjugate pairs and the corresponding eigenvectors are complex too. Numeric methods for eigenvalues

Finding exact eigenvalues symbolically beyond 2×2 is impractical. For 2×2 matrices we can apply the quadratic formula to the characteristic polynomial. For 3×3 and 4×4 matrices this page uses a numeric companion/QR approach to approximate eigenvalues reliably; those eigenvalues feed the row-reduction procedure to compute eigenvectors numerically. For well-conditioned matrices the numeric eigenvectors are accurate; for ill-conditioned or nearly defective matrices results can be sensitive to small perturbations.

Worked example: 2×2

Take \(A=\begin{pmatrix}2 & 1 \\ 1 & 2\end{pmatrix}\). The characteristic polynomial is \(\lambda^2 - 4\lambda + 3 = 0\) giving eigenvalues \(\lambda_1=3\) and \(\lambda_2=1\). For \(\lambda_1=3\), solve \((A-3I)v=0\) i.e. \(\begin{pmatrix}-1 & 1 \\ 1 & -1\end{pmatrix} \begin{pmatrix}x\\y\end{pmatrix}=0\). Row reduction shows \(x=y\), so eigenvectors are multiples of \([1,1]^T\); normalize to \(\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}[1,1]^T\). For \(\lambda_2=1\), \((A-I) = \begin{pmatrix}1 & 1 \\ 1 & 1\end{pmatrix}\) yields \(x=-y\) and eigenvectors like \([1,-1]^T\), normalized to \(\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}[1,-1]^T\).

Degenerate and defective cases

If an eigenvalue has algebraic multiplicity greater than its geometric multiplicity the matrix is defective — it does not have enough linearly independent eigenvectors to diagonalize. In such cases the nullspace dimension is less than the multiplicity and you will see fewer independent eigenvectors.
